Ask An Expert

Is structure engineering troubling you?
Do you face problems in solving even the basic problems?

If yes then look no further as engineeringcivil.com along with Er. Gobind Khurana and Er. Abhimanyu has taken an initiative to help civil engineering students in structure related queries. We are thankful to Er. Gobind Khurana, Er. Abhimanyu and Vincent T. H. CHU for being a volunteer in helping other engineers in solving problems related to structure design in R.C.C and Steel.

Expert 1
Name – Er. Gobind Khurana
Qualification:
1. Bachelor of Civil Engineering From Thapar University Patiala
2. Master of Structure Engineering from Delhi University.

Dear Sir,
Can the field density of sand (used as filling material) be calculated accurately by core cutter and rapid moisture meter? how reliable and accurate it would give if compared with other methods.

I have a problem
What is the best code of practice to increase the hieght of a reinforced concrete column which was previously cast with a short hieght. The increase of hight is required for archituctural purposes. And the region is defined as active in Earthquakes.

dear sir,
i have a problem with structure. i am confused about the actual meaning of share force changes from negative to positive at any particular section. will you please help me.

Shabbir Raees says:

I am a student and i wanna know the engineering characteristics of soil in detail…..If u can tell me ASAP!

abhi says:

@anusha

For strength of materials,refer any book ex:- E.popov,Ramamurthan etc
For structural analysis refer book:- CS Reddy,vazarani etc
To better understand the behavior of structure,load any analysis software like risa,staad,sap etc in your pc, model any structure and see how they behave under certain load conditions with moments and deflection occurring, after practice u will able to judge the behavior of structure under load without analysis and once u know the behavior of structure u feel easy(say interesting) to solve it manually otherwise its just calculations u r performing.

Note:- while studying any mechanics like som ,fluid mechanics,dynamics first always try to judge the behavior under certain situation, its helpful in developing the concept.

sir,
Could you please tell , why the california bearing ratio (CBR) value for soil should be more at 2.5 mm penetration?

anybody kindly provide me the detail project report on rail-over-bridge ROB designing concept and working out forces & loads with calculations.what type of load bridge experiences,there formula & calculations.
thanks.

abhimanyu parida says:

@deepika

deformation in soil during cbr test is basically shear deformation and when the load initially applied the total depth is effective in resisting the load,now the depth available to resist the load at 2.5 mm is more than at depth of 5mm.Also if the cbr value at 5 mm is more than 2.5 mm , it may be the case of poor compaction of soil during preparation of soil sample ( note:- not necessarily true), thats why test is repeated to check any error in sampling.

@D Santhi

From my own exprience, training at construction site is better than design because you already have done enough design in your course.Training at site is helpful in latter stage to understand the problems and issues on site while designing and also helps you in revamp projects.
