Is structure engineering troubling you?
Do you face problems in solving even the basic problems?

If yes then look no further as engineeringcivil.com along with Er. Gobind Khurana and Er. Abhimanyu has taken an initiative to help civil engineering students in structure related queries. We are thankful to Er. Gobind Khurana, Er. Abhimanyu and Vincent T. H. CHU for being a volunteer in helping other engineers in solving problems related to structure design in R.C.C and Steel.

I’m currently doing my masters degree about the influence of the cure process in the durability of concrete with plastic aggregates.
Can you point out sources where i can get some crucial information about it?

Thank you

chethan says:

Hi,

Iam residing in an apartment. It has 2 blocks A and B. We had some water issues hence planning to go for ground water. The location for drilling has been identified. It is quite close to a compound wall on one side and far away from any pillar. One of the members pointed out there was a plinth beam running somewhere close by to the location. My question is – if during the drilling process, it hits the beam. will it affect the structure if so how? secondly will it have cracks in all the beams across the apartment or will it be localised to that beam only. thirdly how to rectify the same. please do let me know the answers for the same.

Vincent T. H. CHU says:

To chethan

The consequece of drill hitting a beam depends on the location where it hits the beam. It is undesirable to hit the beam at its end owing to high shear region; nor it is desirable at its mid-span as it is the point of high flexure. Also care should be taken not to hit the reinforcement as different reinforcement has different functions.

For problem of cracking, there may be cracks only in beams if there is not significant structural problems. however, if the beams suffer from structural demerit, it may affect the load-carrying ability of other members of the building and deveops cracks subsequently.

Dipak says:

I would like to ask one question @ beam-column junction reinforcement.Wheasther the stirrups of beams or columns are to be bind in beam-column junction. And where the main bars are to bind , outside or inside of the column reinforcement?

hello sir, i am in my final year of engineering and want to do a major project related to structures.
looking forward to your help in the form of ideas and related data

thankyou.

UJWALA PRASAD PANIGRAHI says:

Dear sir, How to get high slump (150-180) for a M30 mix with Ultratech Portland Slag Cement? This is required for a tremie concreting for coastal area Piles.

ARNAV says:

1.How to do the M30 design mix with oversize 10mm(61% passing instead of 85-100%) and 20mm(58% passing instead of aggregate 85-100%).Whether it is mandatory to have gradation of aggregate as per IS 383) if not what are the corrections?
2.How to maintain a slump of 100mm after 2 hours?.

Vincent T. H. CHU says:

To ARNAV

Slump-loss is a consequence of water reacting with cement. On avergae, the concrete lost an
average of 2 inches of slump per hour. One may try retarder to extend the time of slump loss.

deepu says:

what exactly are composite buildings?

Vincent T. H. CHU says:

To deepu

Nowadays, it is not uncommon that buildings are designed in the form of composite structure (different materials), for example, they are built using reinforced concrete as the core and structural steel as the outer embracing frame.

suvitha says:

hi,
can any one help me by giving the answer for how to calculate the quantity of cement and sand required for 1:6 plastering

Vincent T. H. CHU says:

To suvitha

1:6 plastering refers to 1 part cement mixed up with 6 parts by weight of sand in plaster.

Vincent T. H. CHU says:

Should be by volume. Typo mistake.

abhishek says:
