Is structure engineering troubling you?
Do you face problems in solving even the basic problems?

If yes then look no further as engineeringcivil.com along with Er. Gobind Khurana and Er. Abhimanyu has taken an initiative to help civil engineering students in structure related queries. We are thankful to Er. Gobind Khurana, Er. Abhimanyu and Vincent T. H. CHU for being a volunteer in helping other engineers in solving problems related to structure design in R.C.C and Steel.

Mamatha Mudbhatkal says:

Could you please let me know whether the power plant with either coal or lignite as the generation material, is it possible to have an estimation of steel, cement, and all materials required for civil work?
If so, can you please tell me the software which a company in this buissness has to purchase for such estimation. I need to know whether any software has been developed and whether is it available in market for purchase and use by the company who are in such field?
I look forward for the reply eagerly.

Sir, I am trying to build a tower crane using pop-sickle sticks. So please tell me what type of truss i should use for the horizontal arm as well as the vertical tower so that the bending will be less when load is applied. Load that the crane should lift is 4kg. Also do give me some other tips regarding the structure so that I be able to build the lightest as well as the strongest structure.

shashikanth says:

use trusses which are inclined make sure that the self weight is more than that of the maximum load to be lifted.

We are completing a project in San Salvador – We are trying to cap an existing springbox to protect the water from contamination. To complete this project we are trying to determine the rebar size and layout necessary as well as the concrete strength and thickness required for a concrete lid on a tank measuring 60″x 56″. Could you tell me the minimum thickness that is required to support itself and a person standing on the lid?

R/Sir,(Vincent T. H. CHU)

I wanna know that can we leave the construction joint at 2/3 of the span??

Vincent T. H. CHU says:

To Amandeep Singh Dhillon,

Construction joints are normally required in construction works because
there is limited supply of fresh concrete in concrete batching plants in a
single day and the size of concrete pour may be too large to be concreted
in one go.

Yes. But it is not desirable to have construction joint at 2/3 of the span with sustantial amount of bending moment.

In some situation, we have no choices but to add CJ at unsuitable locations. For example, we usually have CJ at the base of wall for L-shaped retaining wall which is the location of maximum bending moment.

Amandeep Singh Dhillon says:

thanx alot sir

R/Sir,(Vincent T. H. CHU)
please suggest me the repair methods of CC roads ( cracks and skinout)

Vincent T. H. CHU says:

To g anil kumar,

The method of reparing cracks in concrete road depend on many factors (e.g. location, size and reasosn of crack fromation). Please state specifically the details for my consideration.

Mithun Muraleedharan says:

I would like to know the complete detailed procedure of designing of piles. Is it different for marine structures ? Pls provide me with the design steps..

Vincent T. H. CHU says:

To Mithun Muraleedharan,

Please find the complete design procedures in many textbooks.

For marine structures, piles are predominately designed for resisting the berthing loads and mooring loads. Hence, the piles are designed for uplift action. Also, loads come from lateral directions from all angles and the choice of appropriate section for piles differ from land piles.

Vincent T. H. CHU says:

To Prof Sanjey Mithhar,

Nice to meet you! Why do you want to say thanks to me?

Prof Sanjey Mithhar says:

because you are helping young engineers to solve problems, being a professor I know students have so many questions but they feel shy asking in front of other students. One of my student told me about you as you had solved his query here. He said due to Sir Vincent, my problem is solved and now i feel more confident as i know he is always around here helping people.
