Im a 3rd year civil engineering student. And im going to report for engineering materials subject, and my topic is about steel. Can you give me an outline of what am I going to include on my report? What are the common testing for steel?

Thank you.

Andres Sereno says:

hello, I’m studying civil engineering and I’m starting to do my thesis and I need to learn any software that is capable of making a dynamic and static analysis to a steel frame, I worked a bit with RAM and Sap2000, I have been recommended ROBOT, but I would like to know which is the most used way to find manuals and help from you and that is more commercial. I would also like to know if you can provide manuals or guides for using these softwares. Thanks in advance.
P.S. manuals may be in Spanish or English, I’m from Venezuela

th deficulty i am facing is lack of guidance.
so sir can u tell me what data should i include in the project report ?

Santanu Adhikari says:

How can I improve the 1 day strength of cement / concrete without affecting the workability ?

shibu says:

why 150x150x150mm cubes for concrete compressive strength testing and 100x100x100mm cubes for mortar testing. Why we can go for same mould size for both testing

Vincent T. H. CHU says:

To shibu,

Basically, the force supplied by a concrete compression machine is a definite value. For normal concrete strength application, say below 50MPa, the stress produced by a 150mmx150mmx150mm cube is sufficient for the machine to crush the concrete sample. However, if the designed concrete strength is 100MPa, under the same force (about 2,000kN) supplied by the machine, the stress under a 150mmx150mmx150mm cube is not sufficient to crush the concrete cube. Therefore, 100mmx100mmx100mm concrete cubes are used instead to increase the applied stress to crush the concrete cubes.

For normal concrete strength, the cube size of 150mmx150mmx150mm is already sufficient for the crushing strength of the machine.

Vidhu Shekhar says:

At one of our telecom tower site soil condition was very loose & in addition to it huge qty of water was flowing from ground due to which PCC & RCC mixture were diluted. As we excavated sand was also coming from blow with water & the reinforcement placed for Raft foundation probably sank inside the ground.
All aforesaid conditions ld to reduction in length of Raft, poor RCC strength, Fdn which was supposed to be of M20 was actually founded to e about M12.
Thereafter the telecom tower was erected over it. Now we need to strenthen the foundation without dismantling the tower. Kindly suggest the best solution (min time consuming is priority & then the min cost).
Thanks.

Civil engineering and architecture are different, better to select either

Siddhant Patil says:

Sir, I want to ask what are the best books to clear our basic concept of structure and design.

abhimanyu says:

Some of the good books are C.S reddy, Vazrani, Gupta and pandit (for structural)
and for design in RCC refer A.K jain, Pillai and menon

sam says:

sir, please tell me: after carrying out in-situ dry density test on compacted soil (backfill) and the result is presented to me, how do i know that the dry density obtained from the test is correct or not?

Vincent T. H. CHU says:

To sam,

When you obtain the result of in-situ dry density test, you may compare it with Proctor test to get the relative compaction.

There is a range of reasonable values of soil density. Other than that, there is nothing you can do but to trust the test results.
