Ask An Expert

Is structure engineering troubling you?
Do you face problems in solving even the basic problems?

If yes then look no further as engineeringcivil.com along with Er. Gobind Khurana and Er. Abhimanyu has taken an initiative to help civil engineering students in structure related queries. We are thankful to Er. Gobind Khurana, Er. Abhimanyu and Vincent T. H. CHU for being a volunteer in helping other engineers in solving problems related to structure design in R.C.C and Steel.

Hye.. I’m from Malaysia…i want to ask why Manning’s formula is extensively used compares to darcy-weisbatch and chezy in open channel flow??

Vincent T. H. CHU says:

Manning’s formula was proposed by Robert Manning (an Irish engineer) to calculate uniform flow in open channel. It is probably the most widely used
uniform-flow formula around the world. Its extensive usage is due to the following reasons:
(i) The majority of open channel flows lies in rough turbulent region;
(ii) It is simple in form and the formula is well proven by much practical experience.

Manning’s formula shall not be applied in situations where Reynolds number effect is predominant. For Chezy formula, it is less commonly used owing to insufficient information to find out equivalent roughness and it is not backed by sufficient experimental and field data. However, in smooth boundaries, Chezy formula shall be adopted instead of Manning’s formula.

hi, how do i predict whether plugging will occur in an hollow circular pile driven offshore. is there any criteria to predict or guess whether the plugging is likely to occur based on penetration,soil prop,dia of pile etc.

How do we calculate the running length of steel required for Helical stirrups in pile, the diameter of pile is 760 mm, spacing is 8 tor @ 150 c/c, cover 50 mm.

T Vasudeva Raju says:

Dia of pile= 760mm
Cover=50mm, Dia of helical stirrup= 760-2×50= 660mm
Length of helical tirrup= 2xpiexD=2X22/7X660mm+100mm(for hook length of stirrup), u calculate like this then u get running length of one helical stirrup.

CHANDER PARKASH SHARMA says:

can we completely replace the reinforcement steel in RCC ? if Yes . what is that material.

T Vasudeva Raju says:

PCC (PRE STRESSED CEMENT CONCRETE)

PK Sharma says:

I think by using prestresed Cement concrete, steel is not completely excluded, though the quantity is reduced.

shashikanth says:

reinforcement can be prevented but not the steel most probably. instead we use steel fibrs or poly fibres to serve the purpose

CHANDER PARKASH SHARMA says:

what is the role of third party quality contol/Assurance in civil construction work and why ?

Naveen says:

Third party quality control enables confidence of constructed work and also the workers included in consruction also beware and follow good construction practices as nominated.
