Er. Vincent T. H. CHU obtained the degree of civil and structural engineering in the University of Hong Kong. He is the author of the monthly column “The Civil FAQ” in the Hong Kong Engineer published by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and is the author of the civil engineering monthly columns “The Civil Q&A” and “The Civil Corner” on the websites on World Federation of Engineering Organization and the University of Science and Technology (American Society of Civil Engineers – International Student Group) respectively. He is the recipient of the Ombudsman’s Award 2007 under complaint-related category and Young Engineer of the Year Award 2008 (Merit) organized by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. He is also the author of the engineering book “200 Question and Answers on Practical Civil Engineering Works”, “Civil Engineering Practical Notes A-Z” , “Ask Vincent Chu (Common FAQ on Practical Civil Engineering Works)” and “The Underlying Reasons in Practical Civil Engineering Works”.

For RCC Columns,footings,plinth beam and slab an engineer specified M20 concrete (1:1.5:3). But the contractor is preparing concrete in ratio of 1 bag cement:10 pans of sand: 14 pans of 20 mm stones (that is 1:2.5:3.5 ratio). Is this ratio fine. Please let me know the quality of this concrete. Contractor using pit sand for concrete.

Question is how can i do batching of concrete if i DO NOT have any facility for weigh batch than how do proceed with volumetric batching and with what precautions.. (for M15, M20, M25 at max) it is small scale project.

There is a longitudinal crack in the road surface along the length of retaining wall. The consultant’s have reported that poor quality of backfill and compaction are responsible for this. Backfill is of poor quality because liquid limit is more than the standards. I would like to know what liquid limit does to soil resulting in crack?

Dear Sir,
I am B.Tech in civil engineering and working as Deputy Executive Engineer in Govt. Organisation. I have come across with a problem with design of raft foundation using staad foundation.The problem is, when a performed the analysis, the answer is ” results are not available”. In the output I read the message as loads not found..but, i have applied the loads as column reaction loads using edit list option….the output is with 2 errors and 1 warning…could you please explain me…
